Specialist A-level Spanish tutors

Our personalised tuition optimises for exam success

Everything we do at Learn Spanish is centred on giving the student the best chance of success, according to their specific objectives and circumstances.

When it comes to A-level, this begins with a careful assessment of the student - their strengths, weaknesses and personal learning style.

With reference to the specific exam board, we then create a plan of lessons that gives the strongest chance of success in the exam, giving feedback and support as the student progresses.

We start by understanding the student

Before lessons begin, we offer the student a free introductory session. This helps us to understand how we can help in more detail. We then design a lesson plan accordingly. If the student (and parents, where appropriate!) are happy with the plan and the tutor, lessons begin.

The sort of information we gather in this intro session includes general evaluation across the broad elements of A-level Spanish:

  • Reading comprehension

  • Listening comprehension

  • Translation into English

  • Translation into Spanish

  • Written expression

  • Oral expression

We collect all available performance evidence, including:

  • Mock examinations (papers, answers and results)

  • Teacher reports and feedback

  • Recent essays and translations

  • Speaking assessments

  • School assessments and classroom performance

We also establish:

  • Exam Board

  • Current year (Year 12 or Year 13)

  • Current predicted grade

  • Target grade

  • University ambitions (where applicable)

  • Literature and/or film options (where applicable)

Student development

The lesson plan is developed by cross-referencing the students abilities with the specific exam board's requirements. This might include focus on:

  • Advanced verb tenses

  • The subjunctive (present, perfect and imperfect where appropriate)

  • Conditional and hypothetical structures

  • Passive and impersonal constructions

  • Complex sentence structures

  • Relative pronouns

  • Idiomatic and natural expression

  • Register and stylistic variation

  • Accurate use of connectives to develop arguments

Students gain confidence in accuracy, range and sophistication, and communicating across a range of themes. The emphasis is always on using these capabilities naturally, rather than in learning rules or routines in isolation.

Support with written A-level exam tasks

A-Level Spanish essays require more than summarising a plot or its themes. Students must show critical thinking, clear argumentation, and accurate Spanish.

Our A-level Spanish tutors help students to:

  • Plan their written output effectively

  • Structure arguments

  • Use textual evidence well

  • Write with clarity, precision, and exam-appropriate Spanish

This enables the student to manage their time during the written part of the exam and to produce strong written Spanish under pressure. This is one of the areas where tutoring leads to the biggest improvement.

Improve confidence in speaking and discussion

The oral part of the A-level exam includes photo analysis, discussion questions, and the Independent Research Project (IRP). A Spanish tutor provides:

  • Speaking practice in a calm, supportive environment

  • Guidance on IRP topics and how to structure yours

  • Help developing broader, nuanced opinions

  • How to present argumentation and the phrases and connectors that give your discourse structure

  • Constant feedback to improve fluency and accuracy, and, ultimately, confidence - a key factor in exam performance.

  • How to handle pressure, ensuring the student can retrieve their Spanish under A-level conditions.,

Students become more confident expressing complex ideas and responding spontaneously.

What’s more, if you choose to use our Learning Intelligence system, we analyse each lesson, producing progress reports so that student and parents can track oral and focus accordingly.

Develop listening comprehension techniques

Our A-level Spanish tutors will help with listening comprehension. This is a key skill and forms part of both the dedicated listening comprehension and oral expression parts of the Spanish A-level exam. Our tutors help students develop these listening skills on two main levels, both of which supplement their broader Spanish learning.

Firstly, we focus on the practice that will enable students to better process an audio signal into recognisable language, and help them to cope with different Spanish accents, background noise and speed of delivery. Secondly, we help with the specific exam techniques that will ensure they stay calm under pressure and extract maximum meaning from what they hear such that they can achieve the best outcomes.

Support with reading comprehension

Through general language intervention, targeted reading comprehension practice and exam technique, our Spanish tutors optimise exam outcomes. We have access to past papers which we use to improve the student’s performance and to prepare them for the exam itself. We will help students to tackle the different formats, genres and registers that the student can expect in A-level Spanish exams. Our tutoring covers everything that is required for the exam, ensuring that the student arrives prepared and confident
